Customs Regulations

Entering Ukraine


If you don’t have more than US$1,000 in cash and aren’t carrying any weapons, radioactive material,

illegal drugs or similar items you can pass through the

green channel at customs without filling in a declaration. Duty is payable on anything

over 1 litre of spirits, 2 litres of wine, 10 litres of beer and 200 cigarettes.
 
Leaving Ukraine


Exportation of antiques, works of art, historical treasures and

other similar items is prohibited unless written permission from

the government has been obtained. Visitors can leave

Ukraine without filling in a customs declaration provided

they have less than US $1,000 or 1,000 UAH.

Superstitions and some cultural peculiarities


In Ukraine people don’t shake hands or hand anything over the

threshold – bad luck, you have to come in first

(if you forgot about it, at least demonstrate a rapid attempt

to save the situation, by stepping on the threshold).
In Ukraine people don’t keep empty bottles on the table – bad luck,

if it is informal situation someone will put it under the table otherwise

waiter will remove it.
In Ukraine people try to change a direction if black cat crossed their path – bad luck.
In Ukraine unmarried girls don’t sit at the corner of the table – bad luck,

won’t get married for the next 7 years.
In Ukraine even number of flowers you bring only on funerals.
In Ukraine if you are going to shake hands you remove glove no matter

how cold it is.
In Ukraine most often when you enter house you will be expected to remove

your shoes (you will be given slippers instead), unless directly asked

(permitted) not to do so.

Tipping
Tipping about 15% of the bill (of course if you satisfied with service)

is a common thing in most restaurants. Check your bill carefully as

some restaurants automatically include a service charge (usually about 10%).

Electricity

 
The standard electrical current in Ukraine is 220 V, 50 Hz AC; i.e.

the same as continental Europe. Two-pronged, round plugs are in use.
