Kiev Zoo 

How to arrive: sub. st. "Politehnichesky Institut", Pobedy avenue 32.

In the 2008 guest and habitants of the Kiev Zoo will celebrate its centenary. In the 1908 society of animal lovers decided to create a zoo and maintain it on own expence and charity. At the begining all animals lived in the Kiev University botanic garden, and wintered in the railway station warehouse.  But the number of animals was constantly groving and they were scaring students and teachers in  the garden. Four years later city council give todays place for the new zoo. At that time it was outside city limits and near it was just finished the building of Kiev Politechnic University. The are was covered with ravines and was not suitable for any industrial building. The zoo was open at the new place in 1913. At that was done very little - were build several volaries, cages and lakes for the birds. At then hard times came: WWI and Civil Wa and zoo development stopped for a long period of time. Only in the twentieth startet to rebuild.

Kiev Zoo today occupies 100 acres of different landscape, has 315 species and 2200 habitants in its collection.
